Multimedia Technology Lab

The Multimedia Technology Lab is located in room 106 in the Computer Center. Our hours are Monday through Thursday from 9:00am until 9:00pm. Fridays we are open 9:00am until 5:00pm. We are not open on weekends or holidays or on days when classes are cancelled and offices are closed. The direct telephone number for the lab is (207) 778-7408 (or extension 7408 if calling from on-campus). shodges@maine.edu is the address to use to send an e-mail message to Stacey Hodges, the Educational Multimedia Specialist in Graphics. If you need to call Stacey direct, her number is (207) 778-7314 (or extension 7314 if calling from on-campus).

Our facility is a lab. What this means is that it is an area in which to learn and work. Our mission is to teach people. We do not do work for you, but we teach you and help you to learn how to do it yourself. To that effect, we have a full-time staff person and a large group of student assistants working in the lab. During our operating hours, there is always someone on duty who can answer your questions or demonstrate techniques.

We cannot sell raw materials, but we do have many materials with which you can make projects. A fee is charged, but since it only covers our cost for the materials, it is relatively low.

The Multimedia Technology Lab contains twelve computer workstations. We have six PC's and six Macs. Each one has CD/DVD writing capabilities as well as a common set of software:

  • Adobe Acrobat Professional
  • Adobe PhotoShop
  • Adobe ImageReady
  • Adobe GoLive
  • Adobe InDesign
  • Adobe Illustrator
  • OmniPage Pro (OCR recognition)
  • Macromedia Flash
  • Macromedia Dreamweaver
  • Quicktime Pro
  • Discreet Cleaner (video and audio compression)
  • Microsoft Office Suite
  • Avid Xpress Pro (pro video editing)
  • Internet Explorer
  • Mozilla
  • iTunes

On the Windows machines we also have:

  • Windows Movie Maker
  • NetDrive
  • Roxio Easy Media Creator (CD/DVD writing)

On the Macintosh machines we also have:

  • AppleWorks
  • iMovie
  • MacLink Plus Deluxe (file translation)
  • Roxio Toast (CD/DVD writing)
We have a variety of peripherals many of which can be moved from machine to machine. There are six letter-sized flatbed scanners, two 11"x17" scanners, two 35mm film scanners, six Wacom drawing tablets and two station which are also equipped with a video deck to import and export short, analog video clips from VHS tapes.

We also have three main printers. We have a color laser printer that can be used to print color or black and white. It handles paper materials up to 11"x17" and will also print on transparency film. Our other two printers are photo-quality, 7-color inkjets. Printing to these inkjets is by appointment only. One uses glossy paper up to 13" x 19". The other uses banner paper that is either 24" wide or 44" wide.

The Multimedia Technology Lab contains more traditional equipment such as laminating facilities, plastic comb binder, and a couple of drafting tables.
