Video Services

The Video Services area is located in room 2 in the Computer Center. The hours are weekdays from 9:00am to 5:00pm. The telephone number is (207) 778-7445 (or extension 7445 if calling from on-campus). You can also reach Tim Hupp, the Educational Multimedia Specialist in Video, by e-mail at hupp@maine.edu

SERVICES:

Camcorders:
Both full-size VHS and MiniDV format camcorders along with tripods, batteries, and an assortment of microphones can be signed out through the Computer Center Help Desk. To schedule camcorders etc., you must reserve them on-line. Simply go to eCampus, <https://ecampus.umf.maine.edu/>, and once you have logged in, click on "Tools" in the far left column. Select "Equipment Reservations" in the menu. Due to heavy usage, camcorders are generally signed out only for a couple of days or over a weekend.

For those who are unfamiliar with operating a camcorder, Tim will provide basic instruction for camcorder use. Just contact him in the TV Studio, at 778-7445 or by e-mail at hupp@maine.edu to arrange a time.

Duplication of videotapes:
VHS copies of plays, classes, workshops and special events can be produced. The only expense is for the cost of the blank tape. Those who wish to provide their own blank tapes may do so; however, we encourage the purchase of good quality, name brand tapes.

Tape and Digital editing:
Tapes can be edited for content, sequence or to add special effects, titles, transitions, music and narration. VHS tape recorded at SP speed can be edited directly as tape or loaded onto a hard drive for digital editing. The MiniDV tape can be transferred directly to the digital systems using the IEEE 1394 (FireWire or iLink) connector. Instruction for using either system is available, or student assistants can help with the technical aspects.

Use of the TV Studio:
The TV studio can be set up for conducting interviews, counseling sessions or other activities. Chairs and tables can be configured to the individual's preference. A camcorder and microphone are set up to record the session.

Standard Conversion:
Although the whole world uses VHS tape, the way the information is encoded on the tape is determined by the country where it was recorded. There are currently four major systems in use - NTSC (the U.S. system), PAL, SECAM and MESECAM. Tapes can be converted directly from PAL, SECAM or MESECAM to NTSC or vice versa. As with regular duplication, the only cost involved is for the blank tape.

Recording programs off-air:
UMF is connected to Bee Line Cable TV, with channels from ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, UPN, WB, PBS and many cable and independent stations. Within the guidelines of fair-use, programs can be recorded for educational purposes. Listings and search options for programming are available at www.tvguide.com or use the link provided in the listing to the right.

Videotaping activities and special events on campus:
Plays at the theatre, the Alice James Afternoon Reading Series, the Visiting Writers Series, workshops, guest lectures and home athletic events, are all routinely recorded. Please call or e-mail Tim Hupp to arrange for such tapings.
